what's the best thing for pre-meds to do in the summer? I'm going nuts trying to find a research project or internship or something- does anyone have advice or ideas? I'm getting all stressed about it and it's -5 degrees outside...ack!

go study abroad. I did it, and it was the greatest experience of my life. plus, i figure it'll give me something to talk about that's a bit different than research.

Or, if you'd rather go more traditional, you can do that to. Just remember, if you don't want to do research, don't. You can volunteer at a hospital, EMS, hospice, public clinics, the possibilities are endless really. If you want to do research, talk to some of your professors and see if htey need anybody for the summer, or if they know of anyone who does. that's how it's done in my school anyway, or they'll actually offer it to you if they really need people, which happened to me last year, but i turned it down to study abroad.

There are many options. For my four years, I studied abroad (not medical, although they exist, but in medieval history which was AMAZING), went to geology and ecology field studies, and did summer research projects.

Internships are easily found at www.nsf.gov
......select information for undergraduates of the menu bar that is second from the bottom left. Then select REU (research experience for undergraduates) and then "search reu sites". You can find research in almost any scientific topic that interests you.

Also there are summer literature institutes and jobs in the hospital to consider.

Pick what interests you most and go for it. Good luck.

You might want to get some clinical experience, which is a must for a med school application. You can get a job at hospital or clinic or do volunteer work. But most of all have fun. I like what the above poster said about studying abroad. Having something interesting and memorable to say at an interview helps.
