Hey guys, I know theres a couple posts about this but I still can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I attend school on the east coast but live back on the west coast, and I am wondering what I should do over the summer. Should I volunteer at hospitals, shadow physician(s), do some community service, research, or what?

Many of the research programs I found that are willing to accept freshman are for underprivileged students, which I do not qualify as.

What would be best for me this summer after my freshman year in terms of what medical schools want? Any suggestions/input is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Go to your premed office or do some research and find a summer program near your area that interests you. It could be research based, it could be service based, it could have nothing to do with medicine. Just do something that you find interesting.

My first summer I did an internship in a botanical garden. I taught science to little kids. Some of my other friends did a public service internship teaching science in a summer program. Another worked in a diabetes camp. Another did a clinical program through a hospital that exposed them to a lot of different specialities and med-prep.

There's a lot of options and your very early in your path to med school. Don't feel like you have to do the typical premed things. If you can't find anything then get a job and do some hospital volunteering or something like that.

there are a bunch of threads on this actually. A bunch.
