I'm a long time lurker on SDN first time poster. A little background. I'm a sophomore premed student and I went to a regional campus for my university freshman year before transfering to the main campus. Because there was no support for premed at the regional campus and I didn't discover SDN until late in the previous summer I didn't really have any clue what was required of me for medical school applications and as consequence I have no clinical experience whatsoever and little in the way of volunteering. My attempts to fix this so far have gone poorly.
Anyway this summer I've been asked to do research with the lab that I work in currently for about 10 weeks. My question is if it's worth doing this and being up at the campus for essentially half the summer?
My concern is that with the time invested in research i won't be able to "catch up" in my being essentially a year behind in EC's and that even when it's done I won't be able to find much that will let me do anything for the remaining month of summer. Also, I wonder if the research is worth it in light of the obvious gap in my clinicals. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Doing the research will be worth it, but getting clinical experience is a priority. There is no reason you can't do both, considering that 3-4 hours per week of clinical volunteering (hospital, nursing home, hospice, rehab center, clinic) is the usual amount of involvement listed. If that means two venues for gaining clinical experience, so be it (one near home and one near campus). It is also a good idea to engage in 1-2 hours per week of nonmedical community service as well.
