I did the 3-4 program with SUNY. I'm in my first year there now. At first I had mixed feelings when I got here. But now that I am adjusted, it is great. If you know that Optometry is what you want to do, then why not skip out on a year of undergrad? I don't feel behind anyone else, and I will graduate when I am 24.
I started at SUNY Buffalo, but they didn't have the program, so I transferred to SUNY Fredonia and was accepted into the program. Technically you are supposed to get accepted into SUNY Optometry right out of high school. It seems to go a little differently for everyone. The trick is to call SUNY-O admissions and find out what schools offer it. Not all SUNY schools have it and some private schools actually offer it as well. So you have choice. But you have to stay on top of it and make sure you complete all gen ed courses at your school and all the prereqs for optometry school.
Go for it! There is nothing to lose! Good Luck. 👍
