I'm interviewing with SUNY in early January and I was hoping I could get advice on transportation and hotels in New York. I'm from CA so I'm not familiar (at all) with the public transit in New York, and all the shuttle services I looked at have pretty bad reviews. What hotels/shuttles did you guys use?

Thanks!

Hey, I stayed at the YMCA vanderbilt, its pretty close to SUNY, about 15 mins walk. Its of course not the best place to stay but they got wireless internet and a TV. Its pretty cheap compared to the other alternatives.

As for transportation, I got one on one of those vans that holds like 10 people and drops them off to the doorsteps of their destination. I wouldn't suggest it though, it takes a while, especially if you're the furthest away. Also it was pretty sketch, the guy wouldn't leave until our van was completely full. I waited only ~1.5 hours but the people there told me they waited 2.5 hours!
*Costed me like ~$20.

I'd suggest looking into those buses that takes you to grand central and walking or cabbing to your hotel from there.

if your staying anywhere in manhattan then you can either walk to SUNY (depends where in the city you are) or take a subway. People at the front desk can help you with the subway or you can ask here. Subway is pretty cheap too, 2.25 each way.

I flew into/out of JFK and the public transportation system was very easy to use in my opinion.

I took the AirTrain out of the airport to connect to the subway line...E will take you to mid-town Manhattan, but F is the train that stops right by the school (so at some point you want to transfer onto the F). It costs a total of $7.75 one way to get from airport/school to the other. Since I lived in a hotel in the area, I didn't have additional travel costs from hotel to school...just walked!

Good luck!
