I am a 31 year old post-bac student at SUNY Stony Brook. I am finishing my 2-year long post-bac journey this spring with orgo II and microbio, and I just took the MCAT on Saturday. Since I arrived at SBU in the summer of 2004, I have been conferring with my pre-med advisor about the SUNY SB Med linkage program. As it has been explained to me (and to the other SUNY post-bacs), up to five spots are available each year for SB undergrad post-bacs to link into SB med (thus avoiding the "glide" year.) Understand, five spots EXIST, but they needn't be FILLED.
In my two years at SB, I have done everything possible to maximize my chances of being nominated for this program. The thing of it is, the only way to get this linkage is to be nominated. There is no formal application process. Whereas regular undergrads submit an autobiographical packet and are then interviewed for a comittee letter of evaluation, being an SBU post-bac means that the same process might result in your being nominated for linkage.
The kicker is, just being nominated doesn't necessarily mean acceptance. Once you are nominated, you must then be accepted via an (assumably) quasi-normal AMCAS/interview process at SBU Med.
I was just told by a pre-health office secretary that nomination notification is going to occur this year between May 8-11th.
My question (long time in the asking, wasn't it?) is this:
Does anyone know anyone who has beeen nominated for this linkage?! The paucity of information on this program is staggering. I know only that I have done everything I could possibly do as a post-bac to make myself a solid linkage candidate... I would like to see at least a shadow of the bar that I am trying to climb over. Is there no one I can compare myself to? Aren't neurotic comparrisons what SDN is all about??!!!
