Hey everyone,

I recently received an invite from this program. I've reviewed their website and everything looks really good. Can anyone with personal experience comment on the quality and teaching. I'm really interested in moving to upstate NY because my family recently relocated there. I'd appreciate any advice!! Thanks in advance.

I grew up in Syracuse. It's cold there. Very very cold. With snow. Lots and lots of snow.

Not as bad as Rochester...where I grew up. It's colder, with more snow...but I love it...

I too grew up in Syracuse. Really cheap cost of living, good place if you like snow (I'm talking 175 inches ave per year), and Upstate Med has a pretty decent hospital. Lots of new construction in the past few years, plus a separate pedi EM to boot. And yes, Syracuse does have it's own ghetto spots and a pretty active knife and gun club, so there are quite a few traumas happening. I believe you will also do some rotations at the neighboring hospitals (St. Joes, Crouse and the VA), and all 3 of these are good too-

Plus, the SU Orangemen...need I say more???😎

Being from Buffalo, finally the truth comes out. I tell everyone that Rochester, the 'Cuse, Binghamton, and Albany get more snow, but, since Buffalo is the second largest city in the state, it gets all the press about the weather, but no one believes me.

I know I'm going to freeze my a$$ off up there, but I'm actually excited. My sister and her husband live in Manlius. It would be great if I match there. Also, I can learn to ski. I actually saw snow for the 1st time in my life two years ago when it snowed down here. 1/2 an inch total, and it lasted about 8 hous before it was all gone.

Thanks again for the replies.

Hey NOLAboy,

I'm an intern at SUNY Upstate EM and I went to undergrad at Xavier University in New Orleans. I'm actually from Rochester originally, but my wife is from NOLA, so I can tell you more about the SNOW SHOCK you will go through if you come here. As far as the program is concerned, I am having a GREAT time. Like a poster above said, you will definitely see your share of trauma. Mostly blunt, but for the past few weeks, there has been a serious surge in the knife and gun club. Also, you will see great medical cases. IMHO there is a perfect about of autonomy and guidance. The attendings are all phenominal and the pimping,.... I mean teaching, is great. 😉

Please PM me if you have more questions!! Also, let me know when you visit. I'll be sure to be there during the night before dinner.

NP. I remember the winter of '93 well. People actually had "I survived the blizzard of '93" T-shirts made.

I am a MS4 at SUNY upstate right now. I am not going into EM, but if you have any general questions about the hospital or the area feel free to message me. And by the way the snow isn't that bad. Months of snowing everyday you become sort of immune to it.

I just want to make one snowman. It's something I've always wanted to do. But I'm sure that I will eventually get sick of it.

Anyone who loves the snow doesn't work in it. Firefighters, garbage men, police, EMS, highway - you don't get immune to it. (I've been highway, FF, and EMS.)

You've clearly never met my sister - the EMT and ski patroller. She just posted picture on facebook of her and her college friend. It apparently snowed just a l'il bit this past weekend, so they put on their snowpants, ski boots, hats, and goggles and hung out in the dorm.

What does she do as far as EMT? If it's only part of the ski patrol, that's a LOT of recreation with patrolling.

If she's lugging a stretcher (with some fatass on it) down two flights of stairs, then an icy porch, then through a foot of snow, that's one thing. If it's skiing around patrolling, that's quite another.

She does both. She was a full-time ski patroller at one of the busiest mountains in the Northeast for two winters before college. She was a volunteer EMT in the same town during the same winters. I'm convinced the child is a mutant - she loves the snow.
