I interviewed MD/PhD at Upstate, so I'm not sure if the MD interviews are an hour long (mine were). Don't stress about Upstate interviews! They were the most laid-back, friendly interviews I had. That doesn't mean they don't ever ask difficult questions (know your research well if you put it on your application, your motivations for going to med school, etc), but that they just seemed interested in getting to know us and did everything they could to make us comfortable. I have not heard any of my classmates say they had stressful interviews here. Good luck!

PS- If you have questions, call. I'm sure they will tell you how long the interviews are. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful.

Hey...I currently work as a lab tech in Dr. Youngentob's lab at Upstate. I was considering the combined program but then decided to apply just to the MD one.

It wasn't because they grilled me though. Quite the contrary, it was because it was so conversational that time simply flew past.

they give you a form to fill out when you interview. don't stress, they are the nicest people, nothing to worry about. good luck, be yourself and enjoy the day. and to answer your original question, both interviews lasted about an hour.

Do you guys know if there is any movement on the hold list? or should I just consider that as a rejection?

How did you find out? Are you in state? I applied there and was complete Aug 2nd and never heard anything

From what I understand they either reject, interview or put on hold usually within a month of when you are complete. On hold means you are not considered interviewable right now but you will be considered after they get a better picture of the applicant pool. It is not a rejeciton though like a hold at some places (GW) is.

Yeah, I am instate. I was complete on July 28th. So by that token, I guess, they should let you know soon about your status.

But I was wondering if any one knew if there was movement on the hold list last year, because they do go through some 2500 applications for about 150 spots.

Do not know about your question but how did you find out? Email, Letter, or phone call?

Well after talking to a couple of Ms2's from Upstate and a professor I guess it really is a low stress interview after all.

I got a letter saying I was complete at Upstate dated 9-6, the day after they called me to schedule my interview on 9-8! Holy fast, batman. I'm interviewing on 10-19, so excited.

Jim, the guy I talked to on the phone, said to plan on being there from 8:30 to 2:30, but he didn't specify how long the actual interview would be.

Called Upstate today and they told me that I should be getting a status letter soon. And since, the interiew invites are phone calls, I am guessing it's either a quick and painless rejection letter or the agonizing "on hold" letter. And Upstate was one of my top choices...oh well. I also called Upstate and they told me I'd be getting a status letter soon. The woman said, "We've sent out a status letter. Call if you have any questions".

At first I thought for sure it would be a rejection letter. But why would they say, Call if you have questions?" It can't be an interview, because everyone's saying they're invited by phone...sigh.

it was my first interview as well, and it's a great way to start off the interview trail. you'll arrive i think before 8:30 and they'll give you a big folder of info on upstate, the hospitals, who you're interviewing with and at what time. someone will briefly come talk to you before the day gets started and then you're off to your first interview. they take about an hour, and my first interview was with a PhD on staff... he was really nice, sat down with me and basically started a conversation that lasted nearly an hour (and time flies, believe me!). after the interview (depending on what time it starts, the earliest starts at 9, i think the latest starts at 10:15 or so) you have a bit of time to wander around or sit in on classes. after that comes lunch and a brief (and i do mean brief) description of the admissions process and financial aid. after lunch you'll get the brief (see note above) tour of the campus. after the tour is the second interview, mine was with a student who was also very welcoming and conversational. really, the whole day is NO stress, the people are really nice, the interviews are NOTHING to worry about. everyone (including the interviewees) was nice and easygoing. so be ready to relax and be yourself. i don't know about the others, but i was never asked any difficult question (ie. how would you insure the millions of uninsured or any question of the ethical variety). i was asked about discrepancies in my application as well as my research and other volunteer experiences.

they don't give much in the way of explanations of curriculum, and the financial aid talk was basically: "if you have questions about financial aid, call the office" so if you're looking for info on any stuff, come prepared with questions.

although some parts of the day were lacking, i was really impressed with the people, school, and program and would definitely consider attending if accepted.

I'm a student there and I can say It's NOT a rejection. I'm living proof of it. Yes, there is some movement but I don't know how much, I'm afraid.

Upstate does not give preference to state. They want good students, regardless of where they come from. As far as I know, my year has four Canadians (two from Toronto) and a couple of other internationals.
