SUNY Upstate thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's been really quiet for a awhile now. This is definitely not a no news is good news scenario. Anybody have any info? Any recent inquiries that resulted in some information?

I called yesterday. At first the secretary put me on hold, intending to redirect me to someone handling waitlist inquiries. But then she came back on the line and said that she was "told to tell me" that there is movement, but it is very, very slow; and she didn't have the wherewithal to give any specifics.

Obviously, no school would be reckless enough to say "there is lots of movement, expect us to call you any day now." So these sort of standard, uncertain responses are to be expected. I'm still hopeful though, there is time left.

that's the pre-programmed response, because I've gotten that same response myself a couple of times. I just wish I could know where I am and how many people are ahead of me. That way I would know whether or not to expect a call. Wouldn't it be nice to know if there's 5 or 55 people ahead of you? It seems that Buffalo lets you know, roughly, where you are on their waitlists, just curious why Upstate doesn't do the same.

Does anyone know which if any cell phone service carrier gets good reception in the area around Upstate's campus?

I realize this is kind of not what this thread was about--but someone asked so: Both Verizon and Sprint work well in the Upstate area, as it is in the middle of downtown Syracuse. As you move to outlying areas, Verizon has a more consistent signal than Sprint. Hope this helps.

UpstateMS: What's the broadband situation in the dorms and wireless situation in the campus area? Thanks

There is only one dorm and I'm pretty sure that all the students get broadband internet access. Honestly, I would recomment living off campus. The dorm is a nice place socially, but it's like being a college freshman all over again. Try Madison or Jefferson apartments as they are convenient (10 minute walk) and give much more space for less money. In terms of wireless, the campus is working on it. I think the goal is to have the whole ninth floor and the library wireless by the end of the summer (the ninth floor is where classes are for first years). Hope this answers your questions, and feel free to post any more questions about Upstate or to send me a private message. Best of luck to everyone waiting.

I figure there should be at least some movement around this time.

I can't believe that practically no one in this thread has been pulled from the waitlist yet.

Made the call today. Recieved the standard, "it's moving slow" response. Tried to get an idea what moving slow means, turns out that 2-3 places a week is what they consider slow. So hopefully it will pickup soon. Does anyone know how many people are on the HPA?

Good luck to all, hopefully this will be our lucky week.

I'm not sure but I would think something like 100 people on the HPA list. Considering there is about 10 weeks of viable waitlist time, 2-3/week comes out to about 25% of the list being offered admissions, which is absurdly low compared to what they told us about past years.

I guess we can safely assume that to fill 20-30 spots they would need to make 2.5 times the offers. Which means they would have to offer the spot to 50-75 people to fill those spots. Also the later it gets the higher the ratio since people will have committed somewhere else. Based on this logic are chances are getting marginally better as time passes. Of course there will be a point at which the time factor will play a major role in calculating your chance of being offered a spot and our chances will decrease dramatically. I think this should be a very sweet time in regards to getting off of the waitlist. Hopefully they're calling 10 or 12 people to fill these 3 spots. Enough of the speculation let's just hope for the best.

Good luck,

Not to sound pessimistic (and, believe me, I have no acceptancs so I'm waiting very desperately for a spot just like you), but isn't it also likely that as time progresses people will withdraw from the list increasing the likelihood that those who are left will take the spot if offered?

Otherwise, agreed, here's to hoping for the very best 👍

Though sure would be nice to see at least a few people post good news every now and again to keep us hopeful...

I don't think many people bother withdrawing from waitlists. There is no May 15th golden rule so the motivation is minimal. I'm sure there are still a bunch of people on waitlists who have already committed to the school they've been accepted to and have never looked back. Anyway I hope Upstate gets to their regular waitlist this year so that all the people on the HPA can look back and laugh.

I hope so too.

In fact, the next time someone calls Upstate, it would be wise to ask whether or not they will be getting to the regular waitlist this year. If they provide even a modicum of possibility, it would a tacit admission that the HPA list is more promising then they would have us believe when we ask directly.

So i have an interview in sept. for the early admission program,
any advice???

congrats to all those who are already in and good luck to those who are waitlisted or waiting for an interview

Any one have any recent info?

I was wondering that same thing myself Yodaf.........this waiting officially blows!!!!!!! Is anyone re-applying anytime soon, or are you going to wait this out till the bitter end?

I really, really don't want to send those leeches anymore of my money, not specifically Upstate since they at least showed me some sort of consideration. But for the vast majority of the other schools it was as if i was buying rejection letters for $100 a piece last application cycle. I think I got some rejection letters even before my check cleared. This application process is one lucrative racket.

Anyway, enough ranting. I think I will hold off until the beginning of August to reapply. I have already had my transcripts sent to AMCAS so all I will need to do is some tweaking of my app and I'll be off to the races.

This of course is only in the unlikely event that I am not accepted off one of my waitlist in the next 10 days. Dooh!!!!

Helllooo!! Is there anybody out there?

Any news? Anyone?

There's still a bunch of time left but I'm personally beginning to get a bit nervous. Has anyone spoken to the admissions office recently, like yesterday or today. I will try and give them a call today, hopefully I'll get someone who is receptive to my questions.

that if you call you'll get a response like "there's been almost no movement and we don't know how much it will move....yada yada yada". I'm just gonna lose my mind

The HPA list is moving VERY slowly this year - I would be happy to talk to any of you who are still waiting. Carolyn Couch is our Admissions Office supervisor and fights me for the chance to call students. 🙂 If any of you want to or need to discuss your applications with me, please email.

I told you guys that there is no better admissions office than SUNY Upstate. They are so nice that they even post to SDN in order to help relieve some of the anxiety. I would send them flowers if I could 😉.

But circumstance has it that I will be at Downstate this year, don't get me wrong Downstate is a great place to go to school and I'm overjoyed that I got accepted to both, but the Upstate admissions experience was amazing.👍

Thanks Upstateadmiss, hope to see you all again soon. 🙂

I agree completely Yodaf, top notch admissions office at Upstate 👍 .....now let's hope they can come through for the few SDN faithful still waiting around here. :luck:
