Hi everyone! I have 3 days to decide between SUNY Upstate and Albany. I would appreciate any insight you all might have as I am really on the fence because both are amazing options! Albany is about $13k/yr more than Upstate, and COL would be about the same. Both have an 18-month pre-clerkship phase, and I am not partial to either city (but welcome others' experiences living in these cities and their outdoor recreation options). Would also love to hear about any clerkship experiences within their respective hospital systems, away rotations, and research opportunities. At this point, I am interested in OBGYN, but want to keep my options open for other competitive specialties.
SUNY Upstate
Pros
Pros
SUNY Upstate
Pros
- True pass/fail
- More modern facility?
- In-house exams
- Higher % of matches in NY (I would likely want to match outside NY)
Pros
- NBME exams
- More OBGYN residency placements
- Slightly more competitive matches
- More matches outside of NY
- Not true pass/fail (top 15% get honors)
- Internal Ranking in pre-clerkship
- Fewer research opportunities?
