Hi all! I can't decide between these two for the life of me. I'm not completely decided on a specialty but have an interest in surgery (trying not to weigh it too heavily because that could change). In all honesty I feel more drawn to SUNY Upstate but I want someone to tell me if I'm just being stupid 😓

SUNY Upstate
Pros
  • Great if I decide to do general surgery -- possibility of matching to SUNY Upstate
  • I live in Upstate NY right now so I am used to the weather and can easily visit friends
  • I know a few students who are going to / went to SUNY Upstate and they all had good things to say
Cons
  • I chose the Binghamton campus for clinical rotations -- might regret this.
    • My friend liked the Bing campus and said she got to be more hands-on and work with attendings. I probably should've stuck with Syracuse so I could be at a level 1 trauma center...
  • I heard Binghamton is not a great area?

NYMC
Pros
  • Less name recognition but they definitely seem to be punching above their weight in match, especially to NYC? (I don't feel strongly about NYC but my partner wants to live there eventually.)
  • Close to NYC so better research opportunities, especially with other universities
  • Level 1 trauma center (WMC) and possibility of rotating in NYC hospitals
  • 1.5 years preclinical
Cons
  • During the interview, the current students seemed less happy / enthusiastic than the ones at Upstate
  • Total COA would be ~50-60k more expensive than SUNY Upstate
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other
  • Similar in rank and grading policies (preclinical is P/F, clinical is H/HP/P/F), both have AOA
  • As far as I can tell, attendance isn't required (except for mandatory lectures) and lectures are recorded for both
Thank you!!

Not a ton of info here to decide - I think I would pick NYMC from what you've given us here though.
