Many schools require a supplemental application and considerable fee to process the application beyond AADSAS fees. I have heard in most cases, especially with out of state applicants, unless you have an amazing DAT score, it may be a waste to apply. Comments?

What are u saying exactly? Are you saying its a waste to apply to dental school at all without amazing DAT scores? Because that is how its worded to me. Yes all schools have secondary application fees on top of the AADSAS fees. I say don't apply until you are absolutely ready. Reason one is the money thing, two when reapplying you gotta explain why you didn't get in the first time and what you did in the mean time, reason three is what if you do get in but not one of your top choices and maybe if you could have got into one of them if you delayed your app and prepped better.

The way I look at it is what's another 50 bucks on a secondary when I'll be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt after it's all said and done.

I agree. At this point, there is a certain degree of sacrifice that must be done- money, socially, etc. to reach our goals. Of course DAT scores are important, but I also know that there are limited spots for out of state applicants. I am sure you have been on predents.com and seen people with killer stats get rejected simply because they are not in state.

Oh ok you're talking in/out-state. Ok yeah I agree then unless there is an out of state school you reaaalllly reallly want to get in to then might as well try. Otherwise that's what I did. I chose all my out of state schools as private and don't really favor in-state vs out of state except UNLV

What I did was I looked at ADEA's Official Guide to Dental Schools and picked the schools who had the highest percentage of non-resident students as far as the state-schools go. I did the, "where I'm most likely to get in shot-gun approach". I was surprised to see that University of Iowa "deffered" my application based on my GPA (3.4 overall 3.48 science). They hadn't even received my DAT scores yet. They said it was mostly because of the high cometition and resident status. According to ADEA, they had 25% of their incomming class of '06 as non-residents. I guess things are getting more crazy as competition goes up this year.
