Sorry if this has been repeated before on a thread. I am currently stuck on answering the personal hardships questions for the Supplemental ERAS application for IM? I don't feel as if I have experienced a hardship that is significant to write about. What are your thoughts on leaving that portion blank?

I don't think you have to feel compelled to come up with something if there were no hardship that significantly hinder you in your education. I have many friends leaving it blank.

I think if you really have to dig for it then you’re probably better off leaving it blank. Think luckily about if medical students haven’t had much hardships during their time at medical school which is a good thing. Don’t feel compelled to manufacture something .

If you had no hardships, then what would make you think that the section should be anything other than blank?

For reference, I just wrote about coming from a blue collard family as a first gen college grad and having to navigate the academics and whatnot without much help. That and having to work summers and many weekends helping my family with our struggling contracting business. These are "first world" problems I guess but I feel confident about adding ~300 characters describing where I come from and how it has allowed me to grow and differentiate myself from other more "privileged" candidates since its not really addressed elsewhere in the app. I don't think you have to write about being homeless, being a foster child or anything like that.

All that said, I also think its fine to leave it blank if you are unable to write about something without coming off as "woe is me" or if it doesn't really add anything to your app.

Yeah it must have been difficult being collard blue in a world of collard greens.

You can always write that not having any hardships was a hardship since everyone else with the hardships has a great story to write about in their medical school application essays, so not having one made writing those essays much more difficult.

OK, don't do that
