is it okay to abbreviate school names for the sake of characters? like UCLA rather than University of California Los Angeles

I normally state the full name and if I need to use it a second time I put the abbreviation.

If you're filling out a questions specifically for that school, then yeah, the abbreviation works just fine.

Yes, abbreviating the school's name is perfectly okay.
Abbreviations are okay. Side note: some schools have preferences with how you address the school. NYU prefers to be called NYU Dentistry as opposed to NYUCD. Harvard prefers to be called HSDM as opposed to Harvard Dental.

Yah it's fine. It might be interesting for schools that are not as commonly known such as UK (Could be anything Kentucky, United Kingdom etc). My rule oof thumb is that if there's a common acronym the school uses, it's fine to use it (e.g. NYUCD).
NYU prefers to be called "NYU Dentistry." I have some connection to the school and received this email a few years ago."NYUCD" works perfectly fine but just thought I would share.
