I've been wondering about that too... I'm a little concerned because I've noticed that a great majority of dentists are good looking people. Then, this dentist I was shadowing and asking about getting into the profession says to me, "you're attractive, that helps a lot." Is there some policy in place we don't know about, some no-ugly-dentists-allowed club?? That's pretty sad if so!
1. To remember who you are. They interview a ton of people, so it helps to put a face to the name.
2. To weed more people out if they don't send one in.

maybe to verify your identity.
Think about it, if a person just looks trashy (no front teeth, unshaven, and extremely obese) would you ask them in for an interview? Also yes appearance has a lot to do with acceptance, regardless of job/dental school/grad school/ etc. The facts of life are the tall dark and handsome men get preference to a short pudgy bald guy in any important profession. The girls who are are smart and attractive have a better chance than the smart and ugly girls. Why? Because they remember them in a positive way. The whole point of the interview is to be remembered and blending in with the crowd does not generate much of a memory. Its really sad I know but if you think about it lots of women spend thousands on plastic surgery so that they can get ahead in the business world, and the reason is because there really are results.
i'm having a hard time finding a picture that meets the 2x2 size requirement, i have a passport but not extra passport pictures lying around...
Go to costco if you have that where you are and they get them to you within an hour. I think its like five bucks for two pics.

As nerdy as this is, I set up my camera on self-timer and took a picture of myself standing in front of a white wall. Then I put the picture onto a thumb drive and went and printed out 9 wallet-sized photos (I still need to cut them down to 2'x2') at Target using the self-service thing. It took less than a minute. If you have a digital camera, computer, and thumb drive, I'd suggest doing that.
Some schools take your picture at the interview... then you don't have to worry about it. Just take a pic of yourself, and cut it down. Upload them onto walmart.com, walgreens.com, target.com, any company around you that has an online photo site. then pic the pics up ina few hours. costs about 2.50 for 10 photos or so. Make sure you print off different pics soyou can pick the best one. And dress up for it..... at least the upper half of your body. don't take a picture below your chest. That's pretty obvious, but i guarantee you people wouldn't do it.
Hint: dress in what you would interview in so you look the same and admissions can pick you out easier.....

Thanks guys this is great advice, ESP about the dressing like you would at an interview! i'm going to go dress nice and take a picture of myself now 🙂
To put a face to your application. I remember walking into one of my interviews and I went to the office to pick up my packet and the girl said my name and I immediately thought, how the heck did she know that?! Then I remembered they had my picture.
You can also take them at most pharmacies or various places with a photo dept. I just got mine done today at CVS, 2 for $8.99. If you have a nice digital camera, then it's obviously cheaper to go that route. In addition, do like goffdent said, and dress professionally.
is a white collared shirt fine?

I'd say so.
is a white collared shirt fine?
Its fine. I wore a button up shirt. Just don't dress like a homeless person or a pre-pubescent teenager.

is a white collared shirt fine?
not if its a white background.
gray background good?
gray background good?
I don't know about that... I know some of the schools I was looking at requested the photo to have a light, plain colored background. Really, if it's just a head shot, I don't think white on white would be that bad. Just my opinion though.
