I know that you get paid a small salary while in residency, but what other "domestic" benefits are there? Do you have to find/pay for your own residence?

Yeah you do. Some places in NYC subsidize housing but it is still $$$. Then you may get some retirement stuff, health care, med mal etc.

Some FM places give you a house apparently.
But you have to claim that as income on your taxes, so it may wash out in the end. Most places give insurance. Some give food, others only on call, some none at all.
Free parking at the hospital is common.

The "small salary" you'll receive as a resident is pretty close to the average household income in the U.S.

You'll be fine.

As KentW notes, while the salary may seem "small" in comparison to what you can earn as a physician, it is more than the average US citizen makes and about the same as the US household (which may include more than 1 working person).

YOu should generally get health benefits, including dental and eye, lab coats, pager, but the rest of the things (ie, parking, meal allowances, housing, etc.) vary widely from program to program. For example, I didn't have to pay for parking during residency but have to pay for fellowship, I got a measly $50 a month in food allowance (with my 2-3 bottles of soda a day, that money went quickly) during residency and none during fellowship (but then again, I don't take in house call).

Many residency programs will give you a list of available housing in the area (often homes vacated by leaving residents) but with the exception of a few programs which either have resident housing or offer a housing fund, you are on your own in finding and paying for it.

welcome to real life 🙂

as others have mentioned.. 40K/yr is by no means a "small salary" compared to many American households. It's nearly double what I was making after college for a few years, and nearly half what i was making in pharmaceutical research 🙁
