Hi guys,

I have the choice between receiving a free NMS Surgery or Surgical Recall... Which one is most useful for the surg shelf, pimp rounds, etc.? Also, is Lawrence's "Essentials of General Surgery" worthwhile (i.e. a useful easy read)?

Also, any ideas on neuro or psych texts/reviews? My goal is to do well on the shelf, pick up a few basics, and get the hades off the psych floor 🙂

Thanks!

I read Lawrence during my surgery rotation because I'm going into surgery.

It prepared me very well for the rotation.

If you want to go into surgery, then I say read Lawrence.

Regarding your choice of free books, which one is most expensive and which are you most likely to use? I think Surgical Recall is pretty cheap. It's a must for surgery though.

I used both NMS Surgery and Recall for the shelf exam. I found the recall was easy and quick to read, especially because you could run through a bunch of relevant facts very quickly 10 minutes before going into surgery. As for pimp sessions, I again found that recall was enough for me to have a cursory understanding of the surgeries, with a few interesting tidbits to throw out as "impressie knowledge."

I used NMS as a supplement where Recall was scanty. Recall alone should get you a passing grade on the shelf. NMS is much more detailed and will take you a lot longer to get through, but is also a good book, in my opinion.

Good luck on the shelf....
