I am finishing my IM residency and would like to change to surgery.
what are the chances of getting a residency position after being board certified in IM?

Your key to any possible success will depend on your ability to show initiative and research the topic. Simply being interested and then asking so everyone else researches it for you (i.e. spoon feeds) will not work....

He's an IM resident. He's used to not doing anything, and taking all day to do it.

In effort to provide the OP with a somewhat more useful reply (but just barely), I would venture to say that your chances have less to do with having completed an IM residency (an IM resident in my program started an integrated CT surgery program this year), and more to do with your credentials. If you are an IMG, poor board scores, poor grade in surgery, chances = slim to none. If you are a US grad from a good med school, did well in step 1/2, are AOA and did well in surgery, chances = good.
