Hello to you all,
I am an MS-1 who will go into general surgery (my mind is set on this and I know I might change my mind and all that....but No.....I will go into surgery)

I know that there are a couple of surgery resident roaming the forum and to them I wanted to ask:
I want to do something extracurricular while in med school, but I also want to do something I like.
Being a computer geek, I was wondering if any of you guys knew a field where computers and surgery meet?
I don;t know where to start looking, and some guidance would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Courben

Try looking into Robotic surgery. It is still in its infancy and its niche has not yet been well defined. Its current practical uses are mostly confined to smaller surgical procedures but I imagine that it will become more common place in the future.

Are you a programmer? Web Designer? On the Geek squad?

What can you do with computers?

World of Warcraft doesn't look good as an extracurricular activity unfortunately.

Design software/hardware for advanced laparoscopic equipment for natural orifice surgery. I heard an excellent Grand Rounds from a Surgeon from University of Maryland on this subject. This field is in it's infancy and hopefully, the surgical field will embrace it. Here is a website on the subject.

Surgical simulation is also a growing feild (like flight-simulators but for surgery instead).

The minute I saw the word "computer" in a surgery forum, I started to get really excited! Actually, there are many different types of opportunities, but it totally depends on what your interests are in. Now with all the buzz around the iPhone and other mobile devices, there are new applications being developed on a regular basis.
