I have a question for those who know... I am an attending in a specialty totally unrelated to surgery. I went to med school thinking I'd be a surgeon and I got drawn into other things. I sometimes regret it and think about going back for another residency in a few years, after I pay off my loans.

Now let's assume I am not a good applicant. For the sake of argument let's say I have horrible Step scores and mediocre med school grades and now it's been several years and I'm not exactly the youngest person who ever applied. At least I'm an AMG from a good med school. I finished one residency and I know how to work hard. I have publications in my field, as unrelated as it is. (And if need be I'd happily spend a year or two doing some research related to surgery.) My question is - is there the possibility of scrambling into a prelim spot somewhere? I have heard that there are more prelim spots than can be filled - is that actually true? I know that these spots are not coveted but if it was my only chance, would it be possible? And how are they funded? Would I be excluded since I already did one residency?

And the Steps can't be repeated can they? I.e. they never expire?

If I ever get around to this, I would probably try for better things as well, but I'm just wondering what the worst case scenario might be. I just want the truth. Thanks!
