in surgery, we are expected to be able to take history of patients, followed by general examination, and finally specific examination.

history is pretty easy: particulars, c/c, history of c/c, systemic direct q's, past illness, drugs used, family/social/personal history/habit, etc.

but i'm having trouble with examination. our general examination consists of 25 points. e.g. cyanosis, jaundice, anaemia, lymph nodes, thyroid gland, edema, etc

also examination of lumps, thyroid gland, ulcer, etc are pretty difficult

if i had visual aids, or very descriptive and colorful text explaining this stuff, these things would be easier.

do you guys know of any good websites with videos, images, texts, etc relating to examinations in general surgery?

thanks,
shad

Buy Bates' Guide to the Physical Examination and History Taking. It is a great text which explains all aspects of physical exam and history. Included is a CD and web access code to view videos demonstrating physical exam techniques. The book is worth buying, but if you don't want to there is definitely a copy in your med library.

hey thanks, i am gonna check that out
what do you think about Norman L Browse's Introduction to the Symptoms and Signs of Surgical disease... that's what we use here.

i am seeing some bad reviews about Bates on Amazon (not that I completely trust it)... but I'm seeing better reviews on Physical Diagnosis by Swartz... the pictures & CD are apparently better and less mistakes?

are either of them worth buying, given their high price and possibilities of mistakes? the videos and pictures do seem really tempting
