Just had a question...is there any surgery that an Ortho F&A can do that a podiatrist CAN'T. Also, who takes care of most of the very complex surgeries, the ortho or the pod?

it all depends on a states scope of practice/ the priviledges a podiatrist is allowed at hospital, the training one receives, and what one is willing to do

as with every profession there are excellent and poor surgeons be they podiatrists or orthopaedic surgeons

Yes, there are. It depends upon what state you live in. Some states do NOT allow podiatrists to perform ankle cases, and these go to ortho. Some states DO allow podiatrists to perform ankle cases. Complex foot cases may be performed by either podiatry or ortho, it depends upon the skills/training/privilages of the practitioner. Often it's about who's on call that day and what happens to come in.

Thanks guys, it seems it depends more on the state you live in. I'm sure that may be changing soon however

On the foot, ankle, and lower leg the answer is no. Since they are a general orthopedist first they are pemitted to do orthopedic surgery on the entire body. There are only I believe a handful of states that still restrict the ankle for DPMs.

Yeah, I think I’m applying to TUSPM for the next class. Seems great to me, everything a Ortho F&A can do minus the general calls, all while incorporating derm, vascular, orthopedics, etc. while making a comfortable living. Thanks for the reply!👍
