Any surgeons or surgeons to be out there who can give me suggestions on good surgical glasses? Something fairly stylish that doesn't fog and can be used for everything from repairing lacs in the ER to major suregry in a Hep C positive patient. I simply hate the face shields in the OR and most of the cheaper galsses fog up or get scratched too easily. The gargoyles classics look effective but dorky. Any advice.

I got a pair of glasses from a drug rep. They were ok, but the best non-fogging mask I found (dorky, but my opinion) is to take one of the combined masks/face shields and cut a triangle out over the nose area out of the plastic. Put a piece of tape over your nose taping the mask to your face and my fog disappeared.

Another option, again, may be too dorky for you: wear a regular blue mask. Take a combined mask/face shield, fold the mask and turn the face shield upside down (like a visor) and tie it to your head. You won't fog the same way.

These tricks worked well for me. I used to sweat like a ***** in church during surgery.

Check out safetyglasses.com

I posted a similar thread in the Surgery forum a few months ago and received a recommendation for the above site.

The glasses are cheap (like $5-20/each) and are very good quality. Several are available with anti-fog lenses.

Be sure to order some chubs (the loop looking thingies that hold your glasses on your head when you're looking down).

I wear aviator sunglasses. If I can't look like Tom Cruise in Top Gun while doing surgery, then I'd rather do Psych where I can wear a superstylish bow tie.

I got a good pair from http://www.allheart.com. I have also tried the turning one face shield upside down and tying it around your head trick, and it worked, too.

Crimp the nasal bridge on the mask part of your faceshield and it will prevent your breath from rising and causing fogging.

Or get a pair of Oakleys with clear lenses. I went with yellow on black frames when I wanted to look like a powerpuff girl.

You can use cocobutter on your lenses to keep them from fogging. Just get a tiny bit on your finger, rub on the lenses, and wipe with a clean soft cloth. Volia!
