Hi all. I'm currently an intern and will be starting ophtho residency next summer. I assume that procedures and surgeries will be learned from senior residents, fellows and attendings, but I think it would also be nice to have a reference book that describes common procedures step-by-step. Details will of course vary by attending, but I think having a guideline would be useful.

After a quick search, I found Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures (Hersh, 2009), Basic Techniques of Ophthalmic Surgery (AAO, 2009), Basic Principles of Ophthalmic Surgery (AAO, 2009), and Ophthalmic Office Procedures (Chern, 2004). Does anyone have opinions about any of these books, or know of others? Thanks in advance.

My 2 cents. Don't buy any books. I bet your program has some you can look at.

As far as learning though, I would highly recommend watching videos. You Tube has great stuff, but also look at eyetube.net and oculoplastics.info. Those are my 2 favorite. Most have audio that really helps.

i think the AAO book with the orange cover (i think either the "basic techniques" or "basic principles") is very good. pretty much a cook book for the various surgeries. for someone learning/watching surgeries for the first time, i think it's a great supplement. although i agree with MR1 that having a visual via the websites above are also very helpful. unfortunately the AAO books happen to also be quite expensive. i think the above are ~$90??

Forget the books.
Register for eyetube and you can watch all the videos you'd ever want for free and learn a ton.
