Hey Guys,

I recently started dental school and am in the market for loupes. I know this thread may be a tad redundant because of all the loupe threads this time of year, but I figured I would ask anyway.

I have decided that I think I want more magnification than the typical 2.5x that most D1 students go with. I have also decided that it would be best to keep a wider field size while learning in the pre-clinc. I like the TTL design (unless someone has better reasons to go with flip-ups), seems lighter, and easier to use. Because of this, I figured I would go with prismatic loupes with extended fields. Surgitel and Orascoptic both offer these prismatic loupes with a wider field.

I am looking at the Orascoptic Class III low (3.3x) Prismatic Loupes on a titanium frame paired with a Apollo light. I can get the package for about 1600.
-or-
The Surgitel Compact Prism 3.5x paired with the Odyssey Mini light. I am unsure about the price, but from what classmates have priced (Surgitel is local) the package will likely be 200-300 dollars more.

I like that the Surgitel's barrels are smaller and the fact that the light and loupe are lighter. I also like that both have adjustable working distances, which I could see being good if I have to adjust the patients position from supine to more inclined.
I don't know if Surgitel is worth the price, or if there are any "big" differences between them.

Any advice or information on one or the other or both would be great!

Thanks for the help!

I went with Orascoptic 4.5x prismatics with lumadent light (total 1600). I have very high quailty magnification that is clear. No blue shadows or bluriness. Best combo b/c these loupes alone cost a lot more once you're not a student. And DFV and surgitel charge over $2k just for the loupes for that much mag if you're not a student.

What's your learning curve like? How many teeth do you see in the field of view?

I can see about 3/4 of the arch. the orascoptic prisms are expanded field; they just don't call them that which they should. Not too much of a learning curve, use it a couple days and you're set. It's amazing when I am doing a class 3 prep that is 1.2 mm wide and 1.5 mm tall, that I can see all the details of exactly how it looks; when I take it off it's amazing how tiny it is.

just buy the big mag now and save the $$. They will urge you to go with the 2.5's b/c they know in two years you will want more mag = 2x more $$ for the loupe companies.

Yeah think the higher magnification is the way to go. Does anyone have the surgical compact prisms or can compare orascoptic and surgical prismatic? I think the student price on both is within a few hundred.
