Many students from my school have had their Oakly surgitel loupes break down the middle or they have started cracking. It seems that the lenses are not strong enough to support the flip-ups.... I am wondering if anyone is having the same problem, or has heard of the same problem occuring??? Surgi-tel is making us pay a lot of money to have them fixed, which I think is unfair considering the $900 price tag we paid for them in the beginning. I would love any feedback!
Thanks!
If this has been happening to a lot of people in your class, it could be a production problem with your batch of loupes. I haven't heard of any complaints from my classmates who use them. I've seen the screws loosen up a little, but certainly not crack along the lenses or frames. I'd complain to a higher-up about it if I were you.
I've had mine for more than a year, pretty much use them every day, and they are fine. The screws did get loose a few weeks ago, but I tightened them up and they're fine now. I like mine 👍
I've had mine for 3 years now, and have never had an issue with them. In fact, while others around me have done nothing but complain about their own loupes (which are all other brands BTW), mine have been solid. The Oakley frame is so comfortable and on top of it all, I have never used that stupid head-strap thing, as it's not needed. The grip of the frame is fantastic.
If I ever move up in mag, it'll be Surgitel again 🙂
Yup... It happen to mine as well. Just place an order through oakley for replacement clear M-frame lens. Use the old lens as a template. Drill two holes with a 245 bur to accommodate the the optical unit. Transplant the optical unit to the new M-frame lens. Tighten the screws.
Cost: $40.00 for replacement lens.
Time: 15 minutes.
A simple fix........
Surgitel wanted $150.00 to fix the problem. I said, "Good Day!"
The issue with the M-frame in general, and not just for loupes, is that if you have a wider than average/Oakley design head, you end up putting pressure on the frame when you stretch the extensions out over your ears to put them on. Eventually you can see a failure in the M frame typically right on the midline.
I had a pair of M-frames a number of years ago that I wore for recreational use, and pretty much every 6 to 8 months I'd crack the frame on the midline, and send them back to Oakley. Finally after my 4th frame breakage in basically 2 years, I talked to their customer service rep about it, and they chose to credit me full replacement cost towards one of their non-plastic framed glasses.
I am totally dumbfounded. I purchased my Rudy PRoject TTL from Orascoptic. The first frame lasted about 2 months after which it cracked on the right side. It was replaced after 5 weeks under warranty. The second new frame lasted a week and the third one lasted 2 days!!! The Orascoptic people think I am doing something wrong. The exact same defect three times!!! The only thing I am doing is using 99% isopranol (alcohol) to clean it. Could that be "cold-cracking" the frame??? Anybody else had this issue? I am switching to Titanium as this is absurd! Everytime I Send it back it takes 5 weeks and $30 for shipping!
