anyone know where you can get some basic stuff cheap, just to like practice with - like on chicken legs or whatever?

also, is there any good books that cover surgical instruments and terms for going into clinical rotations??

Most surgery and surgical subspecialty departments keep extra supplies on hand for practice. A visit to your local clerkship director or his/her assistant should set you up. As for sutures, ask the scrub techs if there are any opened but unused sutures at the end of the case, they're usually happy to pass them along to eager yet polite students.

good luck.

If you use suture packaging that was on the scrub tables, be sure to handle the PACKAGING with gloves. Although they are unused, it wouldn't be unusual for microsplashes to get on the packages while they sit on that scrub table. Besides, practicing sewing with gloves on in probably good practice anyway.

An I&D tray "borrowed" from the ER should contain everything you need to get started... 2 types of blades, needle holder, pickups, clamps. Just be sure to return it eventually...

We don't have I&D trays - just lac trays. For an I&D, all you need is a scalpel, 4x4s, lidocaine, needle. I guess some Iodoform would be helpful too. 🙂
