Hey everyone! So it's summertime...externships are over, and I find myself with a few weeks before school with nothing to do 😱 . Anyway, my husband gave me a pair of really nice combined scissor/Olsen-Hager's for my birthday and, even though we haven't had a surgical class yet, I was hoping to get in some suturing practice before school starts. (I LOVE surgery)

Anyone have any good resources for getting started on some basic stitches? Videos? Books? etc...

What's your favorite thing to practice on? I've heard banannas and various items from the butcher work well..

Hope you all are having a great summer!

Go to your local butcher/grocery store and see if they have pig's feet. They work really well for practicing skin sutures.

This may seem weird, but it's true...very good for practicing (it's what we use in our labs). My classmates found them at the grocery store.

Pig feet are good. So is foam. Call Johnson & Johnson at 1-800-255-2500 and tell them you're a vet student and ask for the knot tying board. They'll send you the board, rope, and booklet for free which is all very helpful.

Have fun!

That's awesome!!

Thanks so much everyone for the input, ill head out to the store to see what I can find 🙂

Also Ethicon has a nice suture manual online. Practice getting the sutures evenly spaced and your knots square knots, not granny. Practice using the driver with your fingers in the rings and out of the rings (palming).

And just so you know, a lot of surgeons don't like the Olsen-Hegar or other combination drivers/scissors so you should also get used to using separate scissors to cut sutures.
