Hey All,

I've been considering making the switch from dentistry to medicine for quite some time now. I was a pre-dental and accepted to dental school but decided to turn it after getting cold-feet on if it's really what I wanted to do. I took a gap year and have been working as a full time associate in a dental consulting/research firm and have realized this is not for me. A big thing for me for dental school was I always set on oral surgery but in medicine there are multiple fields that interest me. A lot of my pre-reqs are already done for most schools since the pre dental and pre med tracks overlap quite a bit, but I'm worried about a couple things.

-First and foremost will this hurt me when I apply since I declined to go? i've been speaking with friends and students, some of them are lawyers and even second year pharmacy students who dropped out to pursue medical school.
-Do i count as non traditional?
-When applying would I list all my old dental experiences or would that hurt me? For instance two of my experiences were shadowing/volunteering in Hospital Based clinics which were with both dental and medical professionals.
- Some random things, I have a 3.76 GPA, 3.66 science (3.84 and 3.73 if applying to D.O I think due to differences in grade recalculations).
-Over 2500 hours of research (1800 in a sleep medicine lab, primary authorship published in 2016, few poster and oral presentations and 2 research fellowships). Will this still help me? I am concerned because this is now over three years ago and wonder if admissions committees will invalidate a lot of what I did in undergrad since it's been 2-3 years now.
-I have a Y (differed) grade on my transcript on my thesis course for certain circumstances that occurred while doing my thesis. When I interviewed at dental schools nobody ever asked or seemed to care though, and some schools were research heavy.

Any other tips or criticisms are appreciated.

Get an AMCAS excel for GPA calcs and calculate both initial and retakes of courses.
Stop burning bridges and see if you even LIKE medicine....

Definitely get some serious shadowing time in and see if you really want to be a physician. The adage is, only do it if there is nothing else you can see yourself doing. A "Meh, didn't like dentistry but still interested in healthcare so I guess I'll go to med school" won't be enough to motivate for the many long years that lay ahead of you if you decide to pursue medicine.
