Hi everyone,

I am in the process of applying. From my shadowing experience, I know that I like what dentists do. However, I have sweaty palms. Well, my palms don't sweat all day long, but when the sweat sets in, it's pretty annoying. I have thought about surgery but there are side effects assoicated with it. Do you guys think sweaty palms will interfere with what dentists do?

Any advice is appreciated.

Nope... It will not interfere with what you do, because you will be wearing gloves anyway (universal precautions in infection control).

HTH!

HTH!

..and changing them quite a bit as well....

make sure to try and wash your hands immediately after each time you take off gloves (good practice anyway, but especially if extra sweaty in there 🙂 )

sweaty palms!! 😱 that's just disgusting.. 😉

well at least u don't have sweating something else...

i would think that trying to put wet hands into a rubber glove would be about the most difficult endevor one could attempt. def. wash up and dry up and hopefully you'll be ok!

You can buy gloves that have powder already in them, which will absorb the sweat. Or sprinkle a bit of corn starch on your hands before putting gloves on -- it'll keep them nice and dry.

They also sell anti-sweating creams you can put on your hands. I play tennis, and my hands sweat a lot such that it's hard to hold a racquet comfortably. I have stuff called Dry-Grip that I got at a tennis store I think. Check walmart, they may have something. Anything with Aluminum Chloride or something similar will close up your pores to prevent sweating for 24 hours or so. They make anti persperant like that too that you could roll on your hands maybe...it's called certain dri.

I have sweaty palms...always was self consious over it. I remember my interview

at columbia this past january. The interviewer shook my hand gave me a disgusted

look and wiped her hand on her trousers. I thought she would reject me but I guess I

didn't gross her out too much. I'll be seeing her in three weeks.

When I worked as a dental assistant, I saw the dentists do this every now and then: they'd flip the glove inside out on to the other hand (so the side to the hand was exposed to the air) and let it dry out that way. This way the inside of the glove is not contaminated. It works! If it's really bad, I think they would blow some air from the air-water syringe on it (without touching the glove of course).

Anyway, it was helpful during those looong procedures.

I have a friend in Dental school who's palms sweat like a bitch, but he still does his work!

One of my friends from home had a problem where she would sweat all over really bad, especially her hands and she had a surgery done where they clamp a couple nerves and it totally stops all the sweat on the hands and face. The side effects were compensatory sweating on her back but she says that it is nothing compared to before. if you want more info you can pm me. Hope this helps- if surgery is out of the question, then i wouldn't stress over it, the fact that you will always be wearing gloves should hide it.
