Sweet Prelim Year

Hey all,

As some of you get ready to apply, and start thinking about what to do with your prelim year, may I make a suggestion. Virginia Mason Prelim Surgery. It's been great. I'm on my second golden weekend of the month (we get two every month). Besides the night float month or two, you'll only spend zero, one, or two nights in house overnight each month. So if your coming out to the great Northwest (University of Washington, VM-Anesthesiology, or Oregon) for interviews, or if Grey's Anatomy got you pumped up for living in Jet City come check it out.

I have heard that most Transtional Years are sweet. I know the one at Tulane is supposed to be an easy life style. There is also one in Birmingham at a community hospital that looked really easy, however, I know no one at either of these programs.

Also, isn't there a trend in Anesthesia for most programs to become categorical in the next couple of years?

It seems as if many programs are going the catagorical route. But, if I have to do a prelim year, which would you suggest- either IM or Surg? I thought I liked IM, but these days I'm getting worn out of medicine wards (4th year Sub-I).
Any thoughts?

Of all places, Roanoke, VA is home to a sweet transitional program (Carlilion health system). Good pay compared to the ridiculously low cost of living and certainly low time committment at the hospital. Very competitive though; almost all of the transitional interns down there right now are future radiologists coming from top med schools. Worth a look.

I dont know if any of you are interested in NYC programs, but if you are, the St. Vincent's categorical program is pretty cushy. I know someone there, and while there are 2 unit blocks, and 2 ward blocks, the majority of the blocks are pretty easy, with 40 hour weeks, no call on weekends, weekdays, and you even get 3 anedsthesiology blocks within your prelim year. since this is the only categorical program other than cornell in nyc, you guys might wanna check it out. I think the cornell program is mainly all ICU months.

I feel like I read somewhere that all anesthesia programs have to be categorical by 2008 - but I can't remember where I read that...so take that with a huge grain of salt.
It sounds like Virgina Mason has a great Surgical prelim year - I have heard a lot of horror stories about surgical prelim years in that you are worked/scutted to death because you are leaving after a year anyway. I think transitional years sound the best to me!
