Hello,

As some of you may have read, my mother recently (February 15th) passed away. Since then, school has understandably become incredibly difficult for me. Though my professors have been extraordinarily kind -- allowing numerous deadline extensions, taking exams/tests at a later date, etc -- I still find myself struggling to keep up. As withdrawing from the semester is not an option (as my college has a requirement that you live in the dorms for at least the first year, I had not found an apartment to live in. With my Mum being my only involved parent and all other family members making it clear that they are not willing to take me in/allow me to stay with them, I am homeless at the moment and dependent on the dorms for shelter, food, etc) and dropping classes would cause complications later down the road (in terms of having enough credits to graduate), I have been exploring the idea of petitioning to change one or two of my classes to Pass/Fail, both to salvage my GPA and relieve some of the immense pressure I feel weighing down upon me.

Though I am likely being incredibly neurotic (with everything going on, this would not surprise me), as long as the P/F courses are not pre-reqs, this will not harm me significantly later on when it comes time to apply, will it? In light of everything else I have lost, I would hate to detriment my chances of attaining one of the few things that has kept me going (ie, my long-term, career goals).

Thanks.

You should consult an advisor, but as long as you don't make your prereqs pass/fail I don't foresee any complications.

How much of a drop in your grades are you talking about?

Also I'm very sorry for your loss, I'm very sure even in the worst situation both your undergraduate institute and medical schools will be considerate and understand that this is a difficult situation and not scrutinize you.

I know how it feels as my father passed away during an 18-unit courseload semester, which I did fine with a 3.89 GPA (I was still in shock probably). However my grades dropped the semester afterwards when I decided taking a similar load and didn't give myself enough time to grieve. It hit me hard then, and it was impossible for me to request a retroactive withdrawal on the one class I didn't do well. I have been able to explain this in my application pretty well (it was a pre-req), but I would have rather not have to do that. No one's brought it up during interviews. If you can give yourself some room to go easy on yourself academically during this time and afterwards, do it while you still can. Get some counseling as well; most schools provide this for free.
Good luck.

I took three classes P/F during undergrad. None of them pre-recs.

I took one Art class and two Spanish Literature classes pass/fail during three separate semesters. During two of the semesters, I had a 5 class schedule (normal is 4).

I don't see any problem with having pass/fail in these situations as who cares if I take art Pass/Fail? Would a real grade of an A or a C in Art really matter anyway (except for affecting GPA). As for the Spanish, I was taking 4 other classes and just wanted to keep up my language skills without having to stress out about grades.

I hope this helps you.
Sorry for your loss; stay strong!

Best,
C

Oh no I'm sorry to hear about your mom 🙁

How about getting an "incomplete?" If there was ever a time to excuse a drop in academic performance, it's now. Can you ask a few of your professors to grant you incompletes in order to give you time to adequately turn in and complete your coursework? Some teachers will even allow you a temporary leave. They might grant you the incomplete as a placeholder until you can return later in the year or whenever to finish the work. Condolences; you will grow out of this and into a better physician for sure...

Sorry to hear about your situation OP. Drawing from my personal experience, I don't think it will be a problem at all.

I took 4 or 5 pass fail courses in college. Two of them were in the sciences, and 1 was a pre-req. (i later retook the pre-req for a letter grade). outside of these pass/fails, i maintained a high GPA. my pass/fail classes were never brought up as a concern in my interviews, and i've received multiple acceptances from top 20 schools.

Hope things go well.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Your own health is important - i would withdraw and grieve, personally. Best of luck 🙁
