Switching from Anesthesia to IM, need advice.

Hi,

I am currently a CA-1 and am planning to switch to IM.
I've talked to my current PD and he said he will support my decision.
I discussed this with a former IM PD and he recommended that I find a job as I am applying for a spot. Any ideas for jobs available after one year of transition year, and a clinical anesthesia year? Where to look for these jobs? I am currently in a mid-west program and am planning to move to Boston soon for family reasons. Ideally I would like to be in Boston at least for a year then look for IM programs in East or the West Coast (family reasons).

Also, anyone here switched from Anesthesia to IM? Are they happy with it?

Take step three if you haven't. Get your license if you haven't. There will not be a lot jobs for someone with only two years of residency. I would check with local urgent cares if you want to stay clinical, otherwise, find a research position if possible. Be prepared to wait tables.

Agree. It is June, and it would be very tough to find a clinical position. Finding a research position might be a better idea.
I wd strongly recommend that you stick around and complete an anesthesia residency, and then do 2 years of IM.

I'm done with Step 3 and have my license. Thanks for the good tip about local urgent care centers.

Try and flag ventdendents thought on this. He completed gas and IM. But I agree with JDH, I'd finish your two years of gas, then do two of IM. You'll be very competitive after 4 years of gas training and you'll probably get a top tier IM program.

Finish anesthesia. The job market for nonboard eligible doctor as yourself is abysmal. Trust me.

Just wondering, OP, but what are your reasons for switching into IM? I almost went into gas, instead went into IM....so just curious.

I should have gone gas.......ah to have known then what I know now.

Why do you say that? Also would like to hear Vent's opinion since he has experience in both specialties.

Because I am all about procedures, hands on medicine, and critical care. Had I done 4 years gas 1 CC I would have been able to do procedures and critical care for basically 5 years vs 3 IM and 2 CC where half the time I was on some rotation I hate.
