Switching from Gas to IM after Prelim Year

Does anyone know if its possible to switch from gas to IM after completing the prelim year of medicine? Does the match bind us to completion of CA-1 year, or is it fairly easy to switch if we decide so?

So lets say you matched at a prelim year at one hospital and then advanced anesthesia spot at another hospital, are you committed to start the CA-1 year?

I don't think so, unless you signed the contract with the hospital for your CA-1 year already.

If his status is correct, he's a med student (4th year) and likely a hypothetical.

I can't speak for everyone's experience but I believe you do sign a contract for both. I signed one for my TY and also signed one for my advanced anesthesiology program after match. Although, the anesthesia one was less extensive one and was just a 1-page document that indicated it served as the contract. Not sure if that makes a difference.

As far as I know the match is only binding for one year. I had two residency classmates who came to my program after their intern years via outside the match wheeling and dealing. One had matched in anesthesiology somewhere else and came to start his R2/CA-1 year with us. The other was in a situation more like your, had matched into OB/GYN, then changed and joined us at the start of R2 year.

you shouldn't have any problems at all. i don't know the numbers but i bet there are probably 5 medicine folk wanting to switch into anesthesia for every one that wants to do the reverse. you should just talk to your anesthesia PD. a contract is only binding if the PD wants to enforce it. i doubt any decent program would 'force' you to do something you don't want. clearly not in their interest to have someone around that don't want to be there. assuming its a halfway decent program you matched into they shouldn't have any problems filling your spot. good luck.

I'm pretty sure this is what happens if you do a prelim year. Technically you're matching into 2 different programs and I think you have match commitments to both.

u can still switch, u have until jan 16 of the year that you are to start your ca-1 before u are violating the match

if u are alreayd interested, u can start talking to your pd in your intern progarm about staying on

Matching into categorical program and then switching into anesthesia is different compared to matching into a prelim and advanced together and then switching before even starting the advanced.

Just curious, but was wondering where that info comes from? Hadn't heard that before.

You would not be in violation of the match if you were to switch specialties (in this case, anesthesia to IM). In this case, you would be granted a waiver by the NRMP. You would, however, be in violation if you were to try and switch advanced programs in the same field before you had begun at the program to which you matched. Unless, of course, there were some personal issue that necessitated a transfer.

An applicant who matched to or accepted an advanced position also may request a waiver if the applicant has elected to change specialties, provided the waiver is requested no later than the January 15 prior to the start of training. The applicant must request the waiver in writing and must send the request to the NRMP with a copy to the program to which the applicant matched or in which the applicant accepted a position. The NRMP will investigate the waiver request to determine whether or not the waiver shall be granted.
