I am a Path resident strongly considering swapping into EM. I have no blemishes on my record and above average grades/scores.
How does it work?
Ever heard of this before?

Thanks,
CD

yeah i actually know of a path resident who switched into an ER program at my med school. Both residencies were at the same institution. I think she just talked to the ER director. I think you have two options apply outside the match by calling programs up and finding if they have outside the match positions or apply through the match again. Good luck

You could apply for a 2-4 program so you could retain funding.

Not unheard of. I would go down to the ER you are at (hopefully you are at a decent academic place that has an EM residency) and talk to some of the attendings down there. Try to meet up with the PD. Talk to them and be open as possible. The nice thing about the "EM World" is that by and far we are generally a friendly, open, and honest group of people!

I switched. This is how I found my spot (see website below). From what I understand, pathology does not require and internship year so you will likely have to start from the beginning. You may have better luck going through the match. My suggestion would be, as others have said, to contact the program where you are. Also, submit your application to ERAS if you are interested in going that route. PM me for for more questions. Good luck. It is not, by any means, impossible.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I would love to hear encouraging "switch" stories if anyone has 'em.
