Hi Guys,

So I'm considering switching into the Fam Med program at my hospital due to the lack of enjoyment and stress of my current residency. I have also been very interested in Psychiatry in the past. The reason I'm considering Family is because I did enjoy outpt family as a student. However I am geographically limited due to my wife's job, and we own a house where we are right now. So the transition into the Family Program at my own institution is much much easier than getting up and moving to a psych program elsewhere.

Not sure if I should move to a psych program which would mean that my wife would need to find a new job (we are dependent on her income) which may be pretty hard, we would need to sell or rent our house, along with the fact that I might match into a psychiatry program that I don't enjoy. I know that the Family program at my hospital has super happy residents with a very reasonable schedule. Long term I may not even practice medicine altogether and work for big pharma or something of that nature.

let me know what you guys think. thanks

If you are unhappy as an internal medicine resident, you will likely also be rather unhappy as a family medicine resident as the two specialties are similar. I think you need to analyze the reasons as why you are unhappy. Starting interns as a general rule are stressed and uncomfortable.
