I need some advice: So I recently matched into an internal medicine residency but was having second thoughts later in the year. I did an ophtho rotation late, loved it and think it's a much better fit for my personality. Now if I want to switch, I am basically considering doing research at a top ophtho program (thanks to some connections) for two years after I finish intern year. I realize that I could try to go for an open pgy2 spot somewhere but I'd also like to have some control over the process. And I don't mind that much taking the extra time off. I have pretty good stats (250s step1/step2, half honors/high pass everything else 3rd year, non ophtho research, etc) but am also curious that as a US grad, will the match be as difficult for me as others? I haven't applied once already so will I be lumped into the group of US grads who did not match initially and are reapplying? I know things always get more difficult once you graduate but if I have good research on my plate and letters, could I still get a number of interviews at solid places?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

I see. Well it always gives me hope to hear about other people in my shoes. Thanks!
