Hi everyone,

So i've found myself in a rather frustrating predicament. During my junior year I switched from biology to biochemistry because I really enjoyed organic chem. Because I switched late, I hadn't taken Gen Chem 3, which would have come before organic for biochemistry majors but isn't required for biology majors.

This semester I was going to take Gen chem 3 (which has a lab component), but my professor (and my department head) decided that rather than being able to make-up the labs, which were only Thursdays and Fridays, I would just have to drop my class and take it another time. This was all because I have been fortunate enough to get interviews that have occurred every week and would be absent for almost all of the labs. However, the new schedule for next semester classes came out and the class isn't being offered in the Spring. Needless to say I'm extremely frustrated. My department head is notoriously known as a really big jerk, so chances that he will work with me are slim to none (I already emailed him about what to do, twice, and tried to speak with him in person without and response over the last two weeks). That being said, I can easily switch my major to Biology and finish my time at my university, graduate, and hopefully matriculate this Fall. How big of a deal do you think this would be to schools? They are both Bachelors of Science and I will have taken all the required biochemistry coursework except two classes (gen chem 3 and experimental biochemistry). Thanks for your feedback in advance!

Sorry if this is neurotic, I'm just worried about the potential consequences to any (hopefully) future acceptances.

@LizzyM @Goro @gyngyn I would really appreciate your input on this! I'll gladly contact the schools that I'm under consideration for, but I don't wan them to think I am irresponsible or high maintenance/whiney so I would like to see how big of a deal this might be first...

Ok, so even if I put on my application that I'd be graduating with biochemistry, I should still be fine? When should I notify schools of the change and does it need any explanation?

At my school we wouldn't care. Mere notification should be enough, no need to go into details.

Concur. We don't care about your major, only that you do well.
Thank you! I know that's the general consensus as to picking a major, I just wasn't sure if the same applied once you've submitted your app and would be regarded as some sort of purposeful deceitfulness. But you all have cleared that up! Many thanks

I'm assuming you go to a quarter/trimester school and Gen Chem 3 completes your "1 full year" of gen chem requirement. Just make sure you meet all of the requirements at the school you choose to matriculate to.

Edit: Also, how were you able to make it through (almost) the entire biochem degree without taking Gen chem 3?!?!?

Haha actually no, I go to a semester system school and gen chemistry 3 is actually just a more in depth look at thermo/kinetics than the full year. My gen chem 1 & 2 constitutes a full year and thus it was actually pretty easy to go through the rest of my classes without gen chem 3 actually
