Okay, I realize this is a common problem, but I need help. Here's the deal- I have completed a bit of one residency that I really do not think I want to do for the rest of my life. There is another field I could see myself doing and I have been checking out my options. I have a few questions, however:

1. I'm a US grad; did well in medical school; have a pretty good relationship with TPTB at my program. However, if I do not want to stay in the same town/ institution where I currently am, do I necessarily have to apply through ERAS? In other words, it's almost June and am I going to have to do another year in a field that I don't want to do?

2. If you have switched fields, how did you make contacts in the new field? What sort of things did you need- LOR's from your current program, etc?

3. Any way to get out of a lease that you have signed for another few months?

4. What can I do with myself in the meantime so I'm not living in the poorhouse should I not sign the contract in my current specialty for the upcoming year and I have to re-apply through ERAS?

All advice would be appreciated...
