Switching to MD NEED ADVICE

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Other DO programs will not like this, so what you’re saying is that you want to let go of the safety of this program for the chance to go MD. Sounds too risky to me. What don’t you like about the current program?

A 3.7 c/sGPA and re-take 512 should land you an MD somewhere if you've kept up with your ECs (this being a huge factor, not sure how much you did when you knew you were already guaranteed a seat in medical school). If all you have is grades and MCAT you would probably need to take at least one more gap year to boost the rest of your application. If you're gunning for surgical subspecialties, Derm, Rads etc. it might be worth doing.

So if I read this right, you’re currently in your last year of the BA about to start the DO in a linkage program? If that’s the case could you maybe see if you can defer the DO for a year and apply around to other schools? Not entirely sure how these programs work, so not sure what’s exactly allowed in terms of deferral/applying to other schools.

Other than that I would say that if you start school at the DO program, you’d basically just have to finish it, it would look really suspect if you bailed and applied to other schools after starting a DO or an MD for that matter

What kind of doctor are you trying to be? Do you know yet? If you're trying to do neurosurgical orthoderm or whatever the MD might be better but otherwise I'd probably stick with what you got...

A 3.7 and 500-->512 carries no guarantee of an MD accept these days. If you really hate the program you're locked into, I would suggest going through a well-targeted MD/DO app cycle to at least end up at a DO you would prefer.

As far as I know matriculation is final. Don't plan on applying anywhere after doing so.

I have a 3.9 and 511(no retake) with decent ECs and I have 1 acceptance out of like 40 schools I applied to. Too risky, bird in the hand

Woah, that's crazy! And scary to think that you might be in a tough spot if you hadn't applied to that one school. Are you from CA? How many IIs?

Thank you all truly. With your advice and my tendency I believe I am staying and going to make it work. I truly thank you all. You made a difference in the hardest decision of my life.
