I decided when I left high school that I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. However lately I've been leaning towards switching to human medicine (medical school). I'm now a senior in college...I know horrible timing to think about switching but if I want to I'm going to (already planning on at least one gap year if not two). The main problem is that I've spent undergrad. preparing for veterinary school (animal volunteering, in/treasurer/then VP of prevet. club).

So does anyone think this is doable? If so what advice would you give so I can make my application more competitive?

The nice thing is that most veterinary schools required more prerequisite classes than most medical schools and all of the ones I've looked at I easily have all of the course requirements fulfilled.

My GPA is a bit low ... will be slightly over 3.2 when I graduate probably.

I'll be graduating with a BS in Molecular/Cellular/Development Biology and a BS in Marine Biology.

If I do switch I'm going to immediately find a volunteering position at a hospital or clinic nearby. Also then I'd be aiming for a job in a related or research field after graduation.

I'd recommend doing a post-bacc or a masters program in order to raise your GPA. Additionally, make sure you do well on the MCAT since it is a big factor when deciding which schools you should/shouldn't apply to. Other than that, begin volunteering clinically and non-clinically, shadowing, and research (if able to).

This might take a year or two to make yourself a competitive applicant, but if you truly wish to do medicine, then what's a few years investments towards realizing your dream?
