switching to radiology

Hey all, would appreciate some advice. I'm a pgy1 IM categorical US grad, US IM prog, strong step scores, research (but not in rads), not really diggin medicine thus far (was always on the fence between rads and medicine) few questions:

1. If I wanted to find a rads PGY2 spot for next year (so i don't lose a year), is it possible to just cold email PD's?
2. If answer to question 1 is yes, should I email PD's FIRST or let my current program director know that I want to switch?
3. Would some programs just "open" up an extra spot if they wanted to or is that impossible and I would need to enter into the match?
4. Overall whats the chances of finding a PGY2 spot out of the match?

Have you even started your internship?
I always encourage people to switch. However, it should be based on good reasons.
First ask yourself why you want to switch. Then go to the next steps.

Check out auntminnie. On occasion there are PGY2 positions posted. Not often though.

I think there will be one at WVU next year. I'm not certain about that though. You could always email the program director.

Just as an aside it's ironic that your username is medicineluva. It might be worth going thru the match, but you'll need a letter from your PD when you apply.

I don't know the proper etiquette. Sorry.

I felt that WVU is a good program. It's where I did medical school. If I had strong ties (like married and/or kids), I would have not thought twice about staying. The residents leave well-trained IMO. The only big negative is how small it is. You're on call relatively frequently since they only take 4 per year.
