Hey all, would appreciate some advice. I'm a pgy1 IM categorical US grad, US IM prog, strong step scores, research (but not in rads), not really diggin medicine thus far (was always on the fence between rads and medicine) few questions:

1. Which is better, getting a PGY2 spot OUT of the match or IN the match (ERAS)?
- I like out of the match because then I wont lose a year, however, options are more limited.
- If I participate back in the match, I would lose out on a year and basically my IM training was a waste (i.e. If i apply through the match this year, and aquire a spot, I would enter rads as a PGY3 (meaning I dont finish IM residency).
-Are there any other pros/cons for either choice? Which path would you guys recommend if you were in my shoes?

2. Also, if I do decide on switching, how soon should I tell my current PD? After/before I contacted radiology PD's through the match? After/before I apply for radiology through ERAS?

Thanks in advance for the help

Actually, some recent changes in the way the match work are in your favor. Because positions in radiology PGY-2 starting in 2016 will be "Advanced" matches (A), where spots starting 2015 will be "reserved" (R) matches. So you can apply in the match for both positions starting in 2015 and 2016.

If you think you'll end up hating your job if you continue with IM, I would suggest attempting to get into a radiology residency. Best of luck.
