I always hear of residentswap and residents switching to open spots in different programs but I always wondered the details behind it.
If someone asks the PD for a potential swap into a open pgy-2 in another IM program isnt the program losing out on a good caliber resident who knows the system well? Why would a PD allow it other than really good reasons like geography or change in speciality? If the switch doesn't happen isn't the resident going to ruin his reputation in the program?
I seen a lot of people switching into programs of higher caliber and it always seemed so ballsy considering the ramifications behind it.
