question - if you want to change residencies is it inappropriate to talk to the program director in your desired speciality (at your institution) before definitively telling your PD that you want out? She already knows I'm having doubts but i dont want to lose my current spot if the other program doesn't think i would have a place there.

technically if you match, the program director (of your unwanted residency) cant take away your spot. they are bound for a year with you just like you are bound with them. after the first year, you can do whatever you want. find a new spot, not resign with the residency, etc. i believe this is how it works, but i've been known to be wrong.

actually i'm already in my program - halfway through my second (!!!) year. i dont want to tell my PD im leaving unless i have an idea that i would be well received.
