Hi,

I'm a TX resident and applying to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Is anyone here applying to SWOSU for Spring 2010? Has anyone heard anything from them yet? Has anyone recieved an invite for an interview?

I'm just anxious because I haven't heard anything.

I am also applying for Spring 2010. I haven't heard anything from them either. I don't know when letters are mailed out.

The last thing I got from them was a couple days ago listing the classes that I was missing, it said at the bottom that you should be notified soon if you were selected for an interview.

I talked to the admissions counselor today, and she informed me the letters are going to be mailed out today in the afternoon. She said to expect them to arrive on Monday.

Cool, thanks for telling us 🙂 Let the mailbox stalking begin...

Haha another update. I guess she didn't get them out friday in time because her daughter had her driving license exam. Mail doesn't run this Monday for Columbus day, so I'd expect them to be mailed Tuesday now. So sorry to worry you guys lol.

Thanks for the update!

I say if you're out of state, don't even both applying to this school for your pharmacy or pre-pharmacy. I'm from Kansas and this will be my third time applying.

GPA = 3.91
PCAT = 96
Pharmacy experience = pharmacy tech for 5 years
LOR = none since swosu does not accept them

Not once have I been offered an interview but thankfully I'm applying to other schools so I don't waste my time here.

Since we are out of state, I would expect to receive letters either tomorrow or Friday. The wait is killing me! I really want to get into this school.

I don't think I will be getting an interview though since it's really difficult to get one as an out of state.

Yeah.....since were out of state, but I think after tomorrow I am going to have to move on. This school really fit for me though so its kinda sad. I could of started early and finish early. Hopefully though! :luck:

One of my friends had lower stats than that and shorter pharmacy experience...he was both invited for an interview and accepted a few weeks later (and he applied late - past the deadline)

I think his GPA was around 3.7, PCAT was around 80, 3 years of pharmacy experience, and a Kansas resident (with no connections to Oklahoma)...really weird how you never even got an interview!

I got my letter for an interview on Wednesday. She sent them Tuesday, so if you did get one it will be here sometime this week. Then you have to schedule them with her over the phone. The dates are 22nd, and the 26th-30th. Good luck everyone.

🙁 I didn't receive anything.... It's okay I have been rejected before.

SWOSUpharmPLZ,

I've tried calling Ms. Schultz 5 times today, but she isn't picking up. I couldn't get a hold of her. Usually, she or someone else would be there when I call.

Do you know if she's busy with meetings or is she out of town?

Thanks!

She was out of the office from Tuesday until Monday. It's our fall break this week and she was gone around Wednesday before noon. Try calling her back on Monday.

Edit: Tabouli I live probably a a quarter mile from this school, So i'd prob get my letter a few days in advance. You guys who live further away will prob receive them today or tomorrow.

I tired calling her like crazy because I wanted to set up an interview date. I hope the date I want won't fill up quick. What date are you interviewing?

Haven't decided yet actually. I have a biochem test Tuesday and an Anatomy test Wednesday, so I'm going to try an interview that Thursday because then again next week have an Anatomy test on Tuesday. I have Biochem at 8 in the morning on Monday so I'll have the chance to just walk up to her office and schedule it hopefully on this coming Thursday.

Guess we both have to wait until Monday to set up our interview date. Do you know if it's easy to set up in-state residency at SWOSU?

Prettyaurora, swosu refused to grant me in-state status because: I did not have a fll time job for at least a year, I did not have any parents working in oklahoma, and I am not married to an okie.

If you don't meet any of those three then you will pay out of state tuition.

Does anybody know what swosu bases their interviews on? Do they choose everyone above a certain pcat score, gpa?

By the way, the admissions counselor was on fall break starting wednesday afternoon.

Oh darn. I don't know what they look at. Are you applying for the Spring 2010 semester?

Well when I went to her office and asked about the interview she said "Oh well don't worry I haven't sent the letters yet, but your math science gpa and Pcat scores met the requirements for a SWOSU student applying". I think to get an interview from SWOSU they look at two things only. Math Science GPA and then PCAT scores. Because everytime I went to her office she has never one mentioned my overall gpa for my degree in health science with a minor in chemistry. All she ever talks about is my PCAT score and math science GPA being very competitive.

On the topic of the in state tuition thing, you cannot get in state tuition in the state of Oklahoma unless you have lived in the state with a full time job for at least a year. You can also marry in like someone else said but from most of your situations count on paying out of state.

She also told me the school is so exclusive to Oklahoma because ~80% of the school's funding is from Oklahoma taxpayers and they want the people who get pharmacy degrees from this school to stay and work in Oklahoma. They rightfully assume that as soon as out of staters get their degrees they immediately leave the state and work elsewhere. It's a public school so when I look at it this way it makes sense.

SWOSU has a 30 min writing sample that you have to do. What topics are we suppose to write about? Is it related to pharmacy or is more like politics and current events?

Its exactly like the Pcat writing sample. After your interview you will sit in a room and they will give you a topic. My friends from last semester had the same topic and it was discuss solutions to a problem your generation will face and how you can correct this problem. I think it's used to see your critcal thinking skills and ability to put together solutions. Also its a better example of what kind of writer you are as opposed to your application essay that you had people correct.

I really liked Swosu. Everyone was super nice and I believe it is a great school. The interview I think went really well. I was able to showcase who I am and got a lot of my questions answered. The professor who interviewed me was really nice and reminds me of my professors at my current school. And the students there were so helpful and provided me with encouragement. Is SWOSU your #1 choice? Are you also applying to OU?

My only problem is I come from a big city. I don't know if I can handle a small town like Weatherford. I guess I just have to get used to it.

I was researching places to live. Are you living on campus or an apartment near SWOSU? I guess I'm just anxious to get in that I've started to plan out my living arrangements already. I guess it's too early to plan.... But I want to get in! By the way, are you male or female? I'm female from Dallas.

Swosu is my number 1 choice as i already go to the school and feel comfortable now here. I am applying to OU but I hate the pharmCAS application process. And I am a male lol. I lived one year on campus and 2 years now off campus in an apartment. I can answer any questions u want to throw at me about housing so just ask away and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Oh lol and I'm from big cities as well. From like 4th-8th grade i lived in Houston and from then on I lived in Tulsa so I know what you are feeling. It's a bigger change than you can imagine. We have hardly any restaurants you will recognize. No clothing stores for the most part. You are extremely lucky to come to the town now that just this semester we have a super wal mart lol. I think u will get used to it tho, the student body is very close and you will find that things like no traffic and people always wave are very welcoming. I live at collegiate station probably the closest thing to housing you see in dallas lol everything else here is from the 1900's and smells old. I think you will understand where I'm coming from when u start looking lol.

edit: And one other thing two of my best friends here are from the dallas/fort worth area and they enjoy it here although it takes time getting settled. One is male and One is female both in Pharmacy school I could introduce you sometime if you would like to meet them if you ever come back down to find living arrangements.

Cool. Thanks for the information. My student interviewer also suggested that I stay at Collegiate Station if I attend SWOSU. How far is the walk or drive from the apartment to the College of Pharmacy? I probably will live at Collegiate Station since it's the place that everyone is raving about.

When I was there, I really liked how everyone is so nice. I guess it's because everyone knows everyone and that's why people are comfortable. If I get accepted, it would be cool to meet other students like you and your friends.

The day I interviewed, there was a sign stating that the Walmart has moved to a different location. lol. That kinda got me worried. I don't think I can survive without a Walmart! And there was no shopping mall. I guess you have to drive to OKC if you have major shopping to do. Anyway, I like close knit communities anyway. I was completely blown away that I was offered an interview. I really thought I had no chance at all since I'm out of state and my stats were average. Now that SWOSU has gotten my hopes up, I'm nervous. But at least, I did my best at the interview. I will take things at it comes.

I found out that there's no money for transfer students, but at least I qualify for in state tuition. Hopefully, the COP will give me some scholarship.

Question: I thought the program can be completed in 3 years, but my student interviewer said it's actually 3.5 years. Is that right?

To the building of pharmacy its probably a 0.5-0.75 mile walk. But I am going to go ahead and warn you of the weather up here. Everyday there is about 35-40 mph wind so walking is at times not worth the fight. It's also bitter cold in the spring as well. I think you noticed that all of our electricity is wind farmed so you can understand the wind problem hahaha. Collegiate offers 2 and 4 bedroom apartments, has a pool, and your only bill is electricity (which is cheap here cuz of wind. My roommates and I pay 20 bucks a month and we have tons of electronics and large tvs hahaha). I think pricing is 299 a month for the 4 bedroom which is what I am in and 375 for the 2 bedroom. Good thing is you can get a room and have no other roommates the place doesn't require you to fill all the spots and you are not charged for them. If someone chooses to move in though they have that option.
The dorms is weird because this school is old fashioned and you have to sign your guests in and out. No guests past 12 on school nights and on weekends its 2am I believe. They are really strict on other things too and u have to share a bathroom with an entire floor of students.
Yeah we had a regular wal-mart but now its super lol. So its no big deal and this is one of the few wal-marts in the world where when you go inside you feel like you are the only one there. I get a front row parking spot at least 1/3 of the times i go.
The program is a 2 year pre pharm 4 years professional school. They offer an accelerated program which makes it 3.5. The reason is you spend 3 years in actual classrooms and your senior year is all rotations where you are sent to pharmacies all over the state like a slave.

I would absolutely not recommend that. There are many apartments available near the actual pharmacy school, a walk from collegiate to CPP is about 10-15 minutes while I have a 4 minute walk.

PM me for details if you want. I had my interview last week and felt that I nailed it.

I think there are other factors besides the 6 extra minutes of walking lol. It's not 10-15 minutes either lol. I leave my apt around 7:50 and get to biochem at 7:57 its not very far from the school, tons of kids walk from that distance.

For the hell of it I just walked from the closest building at collegiate to CPP and I clocked in at 12 minutes and 20 seconds.

azwethinkweizm,

What apartment are you staying at? Is it nice? Is it more new than Collegiate? Near the CPP, I only saw house rentals. I didn't really see any apartments that looked comfortable to live in. Does the apartment have a website like Collegiate's so that I could look at some picture and rates?

Thanks!

Its funny how that number came to be exactly in between your orignal estimate lol. Just for fun i recorded myself yesterday too and from school. 9 minutes 50 seconds to get there and then 9 minutes 25 seconds on the way back. And this is currently from the the farthest building. Doing the math of assuming the average walk speed for a male is 3.5 mph and female at 3.0 this would make the walk a little over a half mile. It's probably in actuality in between 0.5-0.75 miles I'm assuming. But hey if you're complaining about that walk then I suppose that's fine lol. I mean i'm sorry but i just don't understand your reasoning on not choosing collegiate because there is about 6-8 more minutes of walking to and from class. But I guess if you really hate exercise then your logic is acceptable.
In all honesty the reason I chose collegiate was because it is roughly 5 years old, offers a nice clubhouse, and doesn't smell like everything else I looked at in weatherford when choosing an apartment. I went with Mr. Tautfest and saw 5-10 different apartments he owned and could not stand the smell or the fact they are unfurnished. Collegiate was the best fit and then the walk was probably my last priority or making my final decision lol.

I realize I should maybe just start a new thread, but since this one is about SWOSU already, I was hoping to see if anyone had any advice about the school? I'm a senior in high school and am planning on attending SWOSU next fall, and continue into the college of pharmacy. Any tips or advice would be more than welcome, if possible. Thanks.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this thread who replied and helped me to answer my concerns. Your responses were appreciated. I know that we all deserve a spot at SWOSU and wish everyone the best of luck.

I think we'll be hearing from them at the beginning of next week so I'll keep ya'll updated about my situation. Hopefully, the update will be about an acceptance. : )

Questions:
Where are you from?
ACT score?
SAT score?
high school gpa?

oklahoma
32 composite
no SAT
4.0

Very nice, I suggest you prepare a decent schedule for the fall. Transitioning into college can be difficult so I wouldn't suggest more than 15 hours. Assuming you have 0 college credit (I had 21 hours going into my freshman year) I would start with Gen Chem I, Bio concepts, a history, and an english. It's a basic schedule but it gets you on your way.

PM me for professors, I know the good ones trust me.

well once my AP credits get put on my transcript after the... first semester i think? then i will have like 14 hrs, then if i can take concurrent in the spring and do CLEP testing, it should turn out pretty well, if things go as planned.

I have been placed on the alternative list for Spring. : (
Guess SWOSU just didn't think I was a good fit for the school. Time for me to move on to other things. Best of luck to the other applicants!

I got rejected but I don't care because I got accepted to my top choice 🙂 !!!!!!! good luck prettyaurora

Thanks, Tabouli! Congratulations. I'm very happy for you. Now, I just have to think of other options.

I have some questions for you guys, if you don't mind: What was your GPA and PCAT and how did you feel your interview went?

Just curious.

wow I know people who got accepted with stats lower than yours, that's strange

azwethinkweizm, I'm assuming you got in since you have a better chance they Tabouli and I had. What are your stats? Mine are pretty much the same as Tabouli. I'm just curious to see what the stats are for accepted students to the pharmacy program.
