Ok im confused here.

the Kaplan video guy gives an example-

BASIS- classical conditioning: old response to a new stimulus

EX- old response: relaxation
new stimulus: snake
old stimulus: mother
(this is what kaplan is teaching me)

but shouldn't it be OPERANT CONDITIONING instead?

EX- new response- relaxation
old response- anxiety
old stimulus- snake

the reason i say this is because what has CHANGED is the response (from anxiety to relaxation) hence, it is a new response,---to the same stimulus(snake)

where am i wrong?

reference is about the 4 minute mark of behavioral therapy video in beh. sciences.

i hope I'm kind of clear but you have to watch the video to know what I'm saying.

thanks for any help.

operant conditioning is all about a future reinforcement/reward that affects future behavior. systematic desensitization is about slowly extinguishing a response from an aversive stimulus (classical conditioning)

mother-> relax
snake -> relax
now replace the snake with a thought of your mother-> you have a snake and your relaxed.

same response to a new stimulus - classic conditioning
in some abstract way, if you imagine that the snake is actually your mom, then you can say that the stimulus is what's changing and not the response (which was classically being relaxed upon thought of your mom)

maybe i'm oversimplifying this but ill try to draw it out

stimulus response

thought of mom-------------------->relax
thought of snake--------------------^^^^^

show dog food --------------------->salivates
ring bell-------------------------------^^^^^
