Systems Based vs Discipline Based better for Step Prep

My search shows that the last time this was asked was in 2008 on SDN.
I would like to ask this question again to current medical students who have taken Step1 (USMLE & COMLEX) to get their take.

I understand that board prep is on the student for the most part but was either curriculum helpful or a hindrance?

Any pearls of wisdom from a curriculum perspective?

The best curriculum is one that gets the **** out of my way. Stop trying to ****ing hold my hand. I am my best teacher for all book learning. This is particularly true for people at upper tiers. The people who got accepted to my medical school did so because they are SMART INDEPENDENT LEARNERS!!! NOT BECAUSE THEY NEEDED TO BE SPOOONFED INFORMATION

So if you have a choice try to attend medical school where AOA is based on 3rd year/Step1 or there is no AOA. Furthermore, p/f with optional attendance for the first 2 years is excellent

The curriculum is a hindrance for board prep. Admin is decades from their medical school training and have no idea what is out there or what step1 even is. They should be forced to take step1 before creating a curriculum.

I would like to know this too. I feel it all may depend on how you learn, I am right now just doing a discipline based approach for initial reviewing but that was how I was and am being taught in school and so I am used to it.

Pretty much true.

Look for p/f. Look for optional attendance. Look for not tons of group work / problems based learning.

I believe Vanderbilt has NBME exams for M1/M2, which would be ideal.
