$$$. Same reason as everyone else in this situation.

Less potential reward than finance but a lot less risk.

It sounds like op had a bad day and literally just sat down and decided to be a doctor asap based on ???

The path to med school is well laid out if you truly want to do it. But it's not ASAP. It's a decade long process or more. Starting tomorrow vs. starting in 2 years makes little difference if you understand the big picture of what you're getting into.

The only thing that matters for timing is registration dates for the school you are going to do your prereq's at. Ironically that is about now for most schools so the timing might actually be imperative but honestly you might not get through the application process soon enough to get enrolled before all the classes you need fill up. If it were me and I wanted "ASAP" the first thing I would do is apply to the nearest 4 year as a DIY post bac.

Hello all,

I created this account about 15 minutes ago because I am completely lost at the moment. I recently decided I want to go to medical school but have not idea how the process works for a non-traditional student like me.

About me:
I will graduate from NYU Stern after the Fall 2017 semester with a B.S. in Finance and Statistics and hopefully around a 3.82 GPA.

I have held internships at NYC hedge funds and will work at a bulge bracket bank this coming summer, but my most recent hospital related experience was back in high school. I also have very limited volunteer/research experience.

I still need to take all my biology/chemistry/physics prerequisites. I have searched for similar students on this forum and found that most students either take classes as non-degree students or enroll in a post baccalaureate programs.

My short question for you all (and please don't roast me for being too broad here): what opportunities should I be pursuing?

Are there any post baccalaureate programs that fit my profile? Do post baccalaureate programs require any standardized tests? How long are post baccalaureate programs usually (I'd like to enroll in med school ASAP)? Is hospital related experience a must? Should I be pursuing research positions?

I appreciate any and all advice.
do the nyu post bacc
it's for people who have never done the science pre-reqs, has mentoring, and a potential linkage

also really introspect before you drop 30k+200k on a career change

Yeah, asap is probably 3 years. The science courses all depend on each other. So a semester of chem, chem2, ochem, ochem2 is 4 semesters. You probably do bio during chem and other pre-reqs, but you don't want to mix too much with any of the science courses. It is a lot less expensive to do your own post bacc. once you have done enough courses to cover the material on the mcat you can take that and finish up any thing that you didn't do before the mcat between applying to med school and getting in. You don't want to take the mcat if you are not prepared for it. Going to med school is about a year from the mcat. So a couple of years on pre reqs and mcat and a year to wrap it all up. Don't forget to do service, and get patient exposure, a bit of dr shadowing, and some leadership through the whole process. Good luck

Just be sure. Seems like you've got good experience in your field. Realize you're starting back at square 1 and it may be a decade before you are done and debt free.
