Hi All,

WL gives us 5 days to make a decision so wanted your guys' help to do some prethinking. I want to ideally go into academic medicine some day in an internal medicine speciality. I am leaning towards the West Coast, but open to moving to the East Coast.

T130
Total expected COA: 330,000
Pros
Good clinical training
In-state tuition after 1 year
Better chance at eventually ending up on the West Coast

Cons
Match list weirdly skewed towards surgery/FM/pediatrics
Average IM list
Not in a city I really want to live in
Lack of research opportunities

Tufts (WL)
Total expected COA: 440,000
Pros
Good regional match list
In a city I want to live in
Good research opportunities
Cons
Difficult to match to the West Coast potentially
Incredibly expensive

I guess my question is if the extra $110,000 in loans is worth maybe the extra bump in prestige for pursuing a career in academic medicine? Does medical school prestige matter for academic medicine?

Are getting off the wl at tufts in 5 days? If not accept the wl position and hold onto your acceptance. It’s good to think through your possible options but unless you know you are for sure getting off tufts waitlist this comparison is a bit premature

Nah, if you get a waitlist offer, you only have 5 days to decide whether to take it or not, so Tufts recommends that you think through all your options carefully before that happens. Sorry, I should have clarified.

It would help to know the name of the other program.

Tufts students matriculate into quality West Coast programs. Many stay on the East Coast because of the connections (via faculty and admin) they build during medical school. You'll have to work a little harder (i.e. away rotations), but it's 100% doable.

Yes, Tufts will give you an edge in academic medicine, especially being in close proximity to so many other programs.

As long as you are okay eating the extra 100k, take the Tufts A. You seem much more excited for Tufts than the "T130".
